A quick chat with Wendy, the Artistic Director of Wired!

Well, it’s the last week of rehearsals for As the World Tipped, and the World Premiere at Norwich and Norfolk festival is within sight.  Everyone is incredibly busy, but I managed to grab Wendy, the Artistic Director of Wired for a quick chat on the phone, and thought you might like to listen in to her thoughts during this, the home straight for their largest project to date.

Wendy was unconvinced at the chiropractors suggestion for relieving her back pain

What are you up to right now?
Just getting in from Liverpool, I was looking into getting a new harness for myself, but didn’t end up getting one.  I have picked up a few things for the project, and then I dropped Mum and Sawyer (her little boy) in at her friend’s house.

What time are you starting work today?
4pm, there’s an hour of working with our climbers, and looking at video footage, then we start warm up for an hour at 5pm.  We’re going to be doing some work on the tip. We’ve gotten a larger crane, so we can do the whole first section up to the vertical tip indoors, that way we can run through without stopping. Transitions are really important to practice at this stage.  We’ll probably be finishing around 1-2am.

Are you tired from working these hours?
Yeah absolutely!  Sawyer gets up at 6am so Jamie and I are taking it in turns.  It’s glorious seeing Sawyer all day then going to work at night, but I am really tired.

Are you managing to eat right?
Definitely, I always make that a real focus for myself.  Me and Jamie cook well for each other, and Mum has been making us all some lovely meals.

How are the performers holding up?
All really good, I find them so positive, all really up for it!  What’s so great is I’ve got nothing to report on that front- there’s no drama, no trauma, everyone’s in great spirits, we’re really lucky with our cast- we chose wisely and we were right to take the time to select the right people.  Everyone has a great sense of humour, even if we’re all tired, we turn into a funny episode of Friends, the fun is infectious.  We all spur each other on.

What are your priorities in the run up to the premiere?
Getting the whole thing finished!  Actually locking down the film and movement content; the main thing for me is that I don’t want to be an aerial theatre company that flails around on a rope relying on how great the video projection looks.  I’m frustrated that the choreography still isn’t locked down 100%, because I want us all to know it in our bones, and have us be stunning physically.   I have to try and find confidence that everything will come together in time, I feel like there’s so much I have to get perfect- we have to get perfect.  Its really important that we run it all the way through from the beginning to the end soon too, because we haven’t done that yet.

What are you looking forward to the most?
Its hard to put myself in that place because we haven’t done the complete rotational technique yet, so I’m not able to look forward to anything yet, I’m too caught up in making everything safe, and making the show the best it can be.  Its great if the performers are, but being responsible for so much, I myself am just far too focused to be able to daydream about anything nice like that, yet anyway!

Are you happy with the show?
I’m happy with the component parts, it’s not there as a show yet, but we’ll put them all together, and be ready. And it’s going to be amazing.

Which is your favourite part?
At the moment, I think it’s the text running, that started off looking absolutely incredible.

When and where is the premiere?
The World Premiere is part of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival, Saturday 21st May at 10.15pm at Eaton Park, Norwich.

If people want to find out more about it, where is the best place to go?
Well, I hear from a little birdy that the As the World Tipped website will be up and running by the end of this weekend, so come Monday morning everyone should go take a look at www.astheworldtipped.com  it’s going to have everything on that thing!

A big thanks to Wendy for taking the time to chat!  That’s all from me for this week- I have a documentary to make- eep!  I’ll be posting again next week as the cloud of madness will surely be descending as we go full steam ahead for the world premiere.  It’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be busy, it’s more than likely going to be complete bedlam, and I’ll be reporting back all the best bits…ah, where would you be without me?

Have a good week everyone!
